Visit Us

Visit us and experience Washington DC history in one of the most historic buildings in the Nation’s Capital. Sumner Museum features permanent exhibits about the DC public education system, as well as rotating exhibits and a comprehensive archive.

The entire Sumner School building is a treasure-trove of Washington DC school memorabilia. Exhibit areas dedicated to materials from specific city schools display trophies, photos, graduation certificates, textiles and even student-produced handicrafts from the city’s other elementary and high schools. The halls, stairwells and even public restrooms contain material culture from DC public schools.
The Sumner School Museum also contains rotating galleries for collaborative mission-based art and historical exhibits by local and national artists.
